After 3 years of abstinence we finally made it again: holidays in South Africa.
Our sixth trip to this wonderful country took us to the Panorama Route at Blyde River Canyon, Kruger National Park, Swaziland, the Indian Ocean and to the Drakensberg
This was our second trip to South Africa in the year of 2003. This time we also explored some areas away from the tourist hotspots.
The highlights of this trip were whale watching in the town of Hermanus and our stay at Outdrif Lodge situated in a very remote area in the Cederberg Mountains.
After more than 10 years of abstinence we did it again: our second trip to South Africa.
This time however not in a motorhome but we took a normal car. We explored the Cape region, the Karoo and the Garden route and we were extremely impressed by the South African B&Bs.
Are you crazy?“ was Elke’s reaction when I proposed to spend our holidays in South Africa. South Africa? Isn’t that this country with the system of apartheid and the permanent riots in the townships? That’s definitely not a place for holidays.
But it was! Of course there was the apartheid which was a strange experience. On the other hand however we were delighted by the great nature this country in the southernmost part of Africa had to offer. South Africa was not a tourist destination at all at those times. So we could enjoy such a beautiful spot like Tsitsikamm National Park (see picture on the right) nearly for us alone. Visiting this place today, that’s really hard to believe.
We rented a motorhome and drove from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The time of three weeks was of course too short, but at least we could see the main attractions. Unfortunately there is not travelogue of that trip available.
